SIPOC Analysis


SIPOC stands for Suppliers, Inputs, Processes, Outputs, and Customers. This tool can be used as a high-level process map of the project. It can be used to set project scope and identify the key stakeholders.

This tool can be added to your active workbook by clicking on Project and then selecting SIPOC Analysis.


Click on Analysis Setup to open the menu options for this tool.


A sample screenshot of the checklist menu is shown below.
Checklist: The input dialog box contains a checklist that you can use to ensure the proper application of the SIPOC analysis. Click on the blue text to toggle the setting to respond to the question. There are seven questions to check the quality of your SIPOC analysis. You need to be able to answer each question in the affirmative to have a good SIPOC. If any of the answers to these questions are not affirmative, then fix these issues on the SIPOC.
View Example: Click on this button to open the example file. You can view the example to get an idea of how to fill out this tool, or you can use the example as a starting point and modify it to meet your project needs.
Help Button: Click on this button to open the help file for this topic.
Cancel Button: Click on this button to cancel all changes to the settings and exit this dialog box.
OK Button: Click on this button to save all changes and compute the outputs for this analysis.


Enter the following data in the worksheet:
  • Describe the process at a high level with no more than 5-7 steps. There is no need for much detail at this time. If you need to describe the process in more detail, use a process map.
  • Write the outputs of this process. These could be the key output indicators for the process. Some of these output measures could be your project's primary and secondary metrics.
  • Identify the customers of those outputs. Who are the stakeholders who would be interested in and receive these outputs?
  • Write the inputs required to run the process. Some of these inputs may be controllable, while others may not.
  • Identify the suppliers of those inputs. Note that the same stakeholders could be suppliers of inputs and receivers of outputs.


If you click the Verify button, the software will perform some checks on the data you entered. A sample screenshot of the dialog box is shown in the figure below. Verify The software checks if you have correctly specified the input options and entered the required data on the worksheet. The results of the analysis checks are listed on the right. If the checks are passed, they are shown as green-colored checkmarks. If the verification checks fail, they are shown as a red-colored cross. If the verification checks result in a warning, they are shown in the orange exclamation mark, and finally, any checks that are required to be performed by the user are shown as blue info icons.
Item: The left-hand side shows the major tabs and the items checked within each section
Status: The right-hand side shows the status of the checks.
Overall Status: The overall status of all the checks for the given analysis is shown here. The overall status check shows a green thumps-up sign if everything is okay and a red thumps-down sign if any checks have not passed. Note that you cannot proceed with generating analysis results for some analyses if the overall status is not okay.


Click on Compute Outputs to update the output calculations. A sample screenshot of a completed worksheet is shown below. outputs The conclusion box lists if there is any problem with the SIPOC or not based on how you answer the questions when you click on the Compute Outputs button. outputs 2
